| Description | Annotation: The introductory essay examines the personality of Sayyid Qutb, an Egyptian Islamist thinker and political activist, who is usually labeled as the founder and forerunner of basic paradigms and concepts of Islamic fundamentalism. Qutb is the author of dozens of books, articles and pamphlets dealing with the political and cultural reality of Egypt in the period between World wars and during the 50s and the first half of 60s. The most influential of his writings is his book entitled Signposts on the Road, issued for the first time in 1964 after Qutb's release from the jail of president Nasser’s regime. One year later the same text was (mis)used as a main part of the charge sheet during Qutb's trial after arresting him anew and accusing him for plot against the national revolutionary government. Finally, Sayyid Qutb was sentenced to death and hanged in August 1966. The essay aims to bring as concise and comprehensive information. The translation is provided with critical and explanatory remarks and comments. |
