Description Within a Czech socially excluded locality, street violence is recognized as a serious security threat. This paper deals with several interpretations of this phenomenon which is oftentimes symbolized as the ‘Gypsy fair fight’. It is analyzed via the dialectical method structured around the thesis–antithesis–synthesis conceptual triad. While a prevailing explication in the discourse of respective locale comprehends street violence in terms of ethnic conflict, a less frequent one opposes this interpretation on the basis of cultural conflict between the so-called decent and inadaptable people. The last stage of analysis consists of re-reading these accounts from the perspective emphasizing structural factors in a ‘Gypsy fair fight’ explanation. The aim of the paper is to localize the social experience of (in)security in relation to the political order and social structure. Taking them into account, we can aspire to sociologically relevant knowledge of how security discourses and practices shape our everyday ways of being.
