Description | The presentation begins to shed much needed new scholarly light on this key aspect of the nation's film culture by way of a case study of the Czech star Jiřina Štěpničková in the period 1930-1945. This specific Czech actress whose stardom was articulated in terms of national and artistic discourses embodied key parts in films considered as classical in Czech cinema history. I adapt concepts developed in the study of Hollywood stardom to argue that, during the period, Czech film stardom was intimately bound up with conceptions of stardom related to nineteenth-century Czech theatre. |
