Description Fluency is a feature of oral proficiency and it is examined from different angles in second language research. One research field focusses on the correlations between utterance fluency and perceived fluency. To investigated this relation, strictly gradual ratings as well as descriptive techniques are conducted. Thereby, the different meanings of fluency and fluent remain a problematic aspect. Based on this situation, this chapter discusses examples in the specialist and research literature and presents the results of a questionnaire survey. In this survey, native listeners rated L2 speakers‘ fluency and explained their ratings. Firstly, these verbalizations allow conclusions about the raters‘ understanding of fluency. Secondly, they point to the fact that perception and rating processes show interindividual variations.
