Description | Based on my qualitative research on Vietnamese families and their Czech nannies I ask the following principal question: Why do Vietnamese families hire Czech nannies to look after their children? I don’t try to analyze the complex relationship between families and nannies, but focus instead on the demand for nannies in the post-migration lives of Vietnamese in the Czech Republic. Analysis of the motivations leading to the formation of intimate relations of mutual dependency between the nanny and the family reveals the specific nature of this pattern—not only in terms of reversing the usual ethnic logic but also in the context of the global Vietnamese diaspora and Czech society. |
