Description In 2012, a constitutional amendment introducing direct presidential elections was adopted. By introducing direct presidential elections, the Czech Republic joined the overwhelming majority of the republics, where presidents are elected directly, regardless of the fact whether these republics are presidential, semi-presidential or parliamentary. The study reviews the current method of election, and compares it to presidential elections in other countries as well as with the elections of former Czechoslovak presidents. The study also analyses opinions rejecting direct presidential elections, and deals with the constitutional and political circumstances of the present presidential elections.
