Description | Czujan’s sand-pit (2 km east of Mikulov, Czech Republic) represents a unique locality with the Middle Miocene mammalian assemblage (Astaracian, MN 6 Zone) comprising altogether 11 taxa: Zygolophodon aff. turicensis, Gomphotherium angustidens, Prodeinotherium bavaricum, Heteroprox larteti, Tethytragus stehlini, Palaeomeryx cf. magnus, Hoploaceratherium sp., Brachypotherium cf. brachypus, Anchitherium sp., Anisodon grande, Amphicyon sp. Early mammutid Z. aff. turicensis primarly identified based on teeth, differs from all known specimens of Z. turicensis by the presence of evolutionary more advanced features of the skull (absence of mandibular tusks and advanced brevirostry). Composition of mammal assemblage corresponds to predominance of open floodplaine forrest localy with isolated grassland biotopes. Mammalian assemblage of the Czujan’s sand-pit corresponds to the subtropical climate which predominated in Central Paratethys region even as late as the uppermost part of the Miocene Climatic Optimum (MN 6; ~14,9?13,8 Ma). |
