Description | The text focuses on the process of urban place identity creation through culturally settled forms of remembering and the reproduction of social inequalities through the exclusion of memories of marginalized inhabitants. The theoretical base stands on the work of Pierre Nora, Jeffrey Alexander, Radim Marada, Csaba Szaló, Talja Blokland, David Sibley and Ryan Centner. Special attention is devoted to the perspective of neighborhood and neighbors relations, as well as creating the relation to the city as a daily life place. Empirically text works with two sets of findings that are both bound to the space of so called “Brno Bronx”. One is the cultural milieu of remembering the inhabiting this area by Germans and later expelling them in 1945. Second set of knowledge comes from the interviews with Slovak Roma who came to the area after 1945. The common topic of this part of the text is ethnicized remembering, that reproduces existing ethnic stereotypes, but also enables creating ethnically defined categories of given city quarter inhabitants and hierarchization of these categories. |
