Description | At the end of the Eneolithic and in the Early Bronze Age, silicite (flint) daggers had appeared on the territory of former Czechoslovakia. They are believed to have been prevalently imported because there is no evidence of their local production. We have registered 87 daggers in the Czech Republic, whereas in Slovakia only 6 such artefacts were found. In relation to the raw material used, we analyzed 42 finds from the Czech Republic. Erratic silicites from glacial sediments prevail in the studied collection. Only two daggers made of local raw material (Moravian Jurassic chert) have been registered in Moravia. The presence of Bavarian cherts, confirmed in three daggres from Central Bohemia, is surprising. The majority of silicite daggers on the Czech and Slovak territories are evidence of contacts with Northern Europe, where production centres were located. The raw material predominant in artefacts from the Czech Republic also testifies to this; we suppose it was collected from glacial sediments of northern Central Europe but in some cases, howewer, we cannot exclude the primary outcrops on the German coast or on the coasts of Scandinavia. |
