Description | Presidential election 2014 in Slovakia was the fourth of its kind in this country. Unlike previous election there was no competing incumbent which meant that a new holder of the presidential office will come from the election. In the first round the Prime Minister Fico won, but only with a small margin ahead of his rivals and fairly below his expectations. In second round he lost to his challenger Andrej Kiska, an entrepreneur without any previous political experience, who was able to gather votes of various segments of the society. Thus, for the first time in history of Slovak presidential elections a non-partisan and a political newcomer was able to win in a competition which is traditionally dominated by party nominees. |
