Description | The chapter discusses the question of identity, in particular the view of identity as a life storz. It discusses psychological research (esp. McAdams, Bruner, Linde) that shows that people understand themselves, other people as well as the world around them through stories. These theories are then related to narratological concepts, such as the narrated and narrating I, unreliable narration, reading fictional minds, and master narratives. The chapter also elucidates various factors that influence our life stories and thus self-definition: the unreliability of memories, the impact of the culture in which we live and the language which we speak, and properties of narrative. |
