Description We present an overview of current opinions on combinations in the treatment of hypertension. A renin-angiotensin system blocker (ACE-inhibitor or sartan) combined with a calcium channel blocker is the most frequently recommended combination, followed by the combination of a renin-angiotensin system blocker and a diuretic. The combination of a beta blocker and a diuretic or a calcium channel blocker with a beta blocker has now been recommended in special situations as well. Higher patient compliance enabling better control of hypertension is the main advantage of fixed combinations.
