Description This poster deals with the quality of life during the period of dying in Czech hospitals. The greater part of terminally ill people are dying in hospitals or in other health care institutions. In the Czech Republic there is no long history of palliative care. The first hospice was built in 1994 in Cerveny Kostelec thanks to Marie Svatosova. It is possible to say that this enterprise started more remarkable interest in palliative care in the Czech Republic. In hospices, palliative care is provided very successfully. But what kind of care is accomplished in the end-of-life phase in hospitals? The poster answers some important and contemporary issues such as: What has been done for palliation in hospitals over the last 20 years? Can we recognize the right time to stop curative therapy and to start palliation? Can we use palliation correctly and effectively? And what is the opinion of people who are terminally ill? The fact is that care in hospitals during the period of dying is artificially prolonged. The poster reports on what is going on in this extended time, whether is it beneficial and eligible. Communication has a crucial role as well as patients‘ personal preferences in this field. However, communication is commonly overlooked.
