Description | The conference presentation reports on the results of a survey into the academic writing skills of students of English at the Faculty of Education, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic. The aim is twofold: 1. to present data on students’ previous experience and knowledge of writing in English, their current writing and academic writing skills, their needs and prospective goals in their further university studies; and 2. to reflect the results in the (re)designing of courses on academic writing skills at a university. The data show that the teaching of academic writing skills at a university should not be limited exclusively to academic writing courses but should be incorporated into various other university courses, so that exposure to expert academic texts written in English together with tuition provided by teachers result in the development and improvement of the students’ own academic texts. |
