Description | The aim of this text is to describe perception and consciousness of characters who found themselves in a ghetto or a concentration camp. The characters are feeling entities, and as such they reflect on their being in such non-standard conditions. The awareness of losing all they took for granted intensifies their mental suffering, and hopelessness and helplessness bring forward more extreme situations. Returning home poses certain dangers. How is it possible to deal with life after war and with losing the family? They are not sure whether they will have enough determination to confide their experiences. We have focused on how Lustig’s and Kertész’s characters deal with experienced traumas and whether they have been able to find inner strength to become reconciled with the reality. We have been watching what narrative approaches both of the authors used to capture the inner world of the characters, their reasoning or mental states in the fictitious world of the story. We tried to find what Lustig’s and Kertész’s characters have in common – we focused mainly on their experiences and perception of the world – and we also tried to find what differentiated them. |
