Description | Health-promoting behavior is defined as personal actions to sustain or increase wellness. The aim of the study was to explore its relationships to Mental health and Life values. Research sample consists of 1498 Czech respondents (68% females, 32% males, aged between 15 and 93). Methods: We used Health-Promoting Behavior Scale (Dosedlova et al., 2011), Mental Health Continuum-SF (Keyes, 2005), Life Values Scale (modif. Rokeach, 1967), and Scale for Subjective Evaluation of Health Problems (own development). The online data collection took place in 2014-2015, SPSS was used for data analysis. Results: The correlation analysis revealed significant relationships (p<0.01) between Mental health and groups of Life values pooled to following factors: Harmony (r=.196), Achievement (r=.132) and Social contribution (r=.193). We revealed also significant correlations between Mental health and frequency of health problems (r=-.293; p<0.01) Hierarchical regression analysis disclosed three HPB factors, Maintaining mental well-being (Beta=.491, p<0.001), Physical activity (Beta=.189; p<0.001) and Regular daily routine (Beta=.114; p<0.001), as main independent predictors of Mental health. Together with values factors Social contribution and Harmony they explain 38 % of variance of Mental health. Conclusions: The results highlight the positive effect of health-promoting behavior both on physical health and mental health. |
