Description | Lymphomas are the tumours, which incidence grows with age. Median age for newly diagnosed patients is about 60 years in Europe and North America. That means, approximately half of patients falls into cathegory ,,elderly". Adequate management of older patient with lymphoma is based on the precise diagnosis. The prognosis of these subgroup of patients is determined by lymphoma subtype and its extent, but also by the global performace status and comorbidities. The main limitation of chemotherapy-based approach in lymphoma patients is the substantial toxicity of common used regimens. This paradigma is recently changed with access to the new types of biological therapy (antibodies, immumodulatory drugs, specific kinase inhibitors etc...) showing high efficacy and low toxicity, and the cut-off for curability moves to older and older people. The precise diagnosis and especially treatment of elderly lymphoma patients should be conducted in the authorized and experienced hematology centers. |
