Description | The paper deals with one of the basic disciplines of ancient gymnic agón called pygmé (or pygmachia) meaning boxing and its influence on literature and the arts in modern sense (especially sculpture and vase painting). It describes pygmé, its equipment, rules, significance and impact. Furthermore, it emphasizes the changes of pygmé in time, especially regarding the increasing cruelty and bodily harm during the agón itself posing interesting parallels to the development of Greek (Cretan, Mycenaean, Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic) art. Finally, it depicts how pygmé was reflected in arts and social life, and analyzes the references to the main protagonists, the best athletai of this popular gymnic discipline. |
