| Description | The paper is dedicated sub-group of publishers' bookbindings of the second half of the 19th century, “speaking bindings”. For these bindings is characteristic picture or illustration on the front panel that refers directly to the content of the book. It was infiltrated to the Czech environment late 80s of the 19th century from France and these bindings are associated mostly with the painter and illustrator Viktor Oliva. On the beginning brought these "speaking bindings" new impulse to the existing publishers' bookbindings. Compared to parallel historicist editing, "speaking bindings" didn’t imitate old styles, but connected two important parts of the book, inner content of the book and external decoration. The books much easier communicated with the reader and thus formed a significant opposite to the existing traditional tendencies in book editing. Aim of this article was to introduce this form of publishers' bookbinding as an important mean of communication between the publisher, bookbinder, an artist, but also a writer and the reader. |
