| Description | Diagnostics and treatment of chronic pancreatitis were greatly improved in the past decades. Novel non-invasive imaging methods (with very high resolution) are able to identify even the slight changes of the pancreas that are supportive for the diagnosis chronic pancreatitis. Invasive endoscopic ultrasound is another method that enables bioptic samples collection and that help in differentiating benign and malign lesions. Concerning the treatment of the pancreatic pain related to chronic pancreatitis, medicament therapy is always the first choice, followed by the endoscopic or surgical treatment, if it is unsuccessful. We do believe that only a small portion of patients shall by treated with opioids; the effect of endoscopic treatment seems to be beneficial in the initial therapy, on the other hand, effect of surgical treatment seems to last longer. Chronic pancreatitis is the disease that can be treated, however, with a few exceptions, it cannot be cured completely; it is a disease that requires systematic life-long follow-ups since it is a risk factor for developing pancreatic cancer. |
