Description | The article focuses on urban images depicted in the novel Elephant´s Memory (1979) by António Lobo Antunes. We propose an analysis based on two representational modes which can be defined as “real city” (images of “visible” city, situated in the postcolonial era) and “imaginary city” (images of city, read as a patchwork of myths and various types of discourse). The “real city”, besides referring to some existing places in Lisbon, contains a spatial item – a psychiatric hospital – that could be perceived as a (postcolonial) heterotopy. The “imaginary city”, connected to the night passage through the city – a symbolic demand for the self and the Other –, reveals some mythical images and textual crossing that enrich the postcolonial imaginary of the Portuguese capital. |
