Description | In the eighties of the twentieth century in the former Czechoslovakia a significant amount of science fiction texts (mainly short stories) with distinctive dystopian features reflecting the experience of life in the society suppressing any individuality, personal responsibility and creativity was written. The specificities of these texts included the use of satire, irony and grotesque, the absence of the heroic figures of and mixing municipal satire with serious ethical issues. The paper is focused on a comparison of selected texts from this period (works by Ivan Kmínek, Josef Pecinovský, Jan Hlavička) with recent fantastic literature and try to answer the question whether and how the shape and role of dystopic elements changed in Czech fantastic literature. |
