| Description | There is emerging evidence showing that patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have a significant deficit in postural control which may negatively influence a patient's ability to maintain stability and balance. It is important to note that this ability is critical for a patient's functional independence in the activities of daily living and for avoiding falls. Balance impairments in patients with COPD may increase the risk of falls. The increased number of falls in these patients may result in serious health complications. Impaired postural control and low levels of physical activity pose an increased risk for hospital admissions. For these reasons, it is very important to recognize balance impairments as soon as possible to reduce the risk of falls and other serious health complications. It is necessary to increase the awareness of postural deficits in COPD patients for extending the standard evaluation and include postural training into comprehensive treatment of these patients to decrease the risk of falls. |
