Description | The aim of the study was to explore how the level of overtraining changes during the different phases of the sport season of elite athletes - swimmers and whether psychological intervention (mindfulness, PST) can affect this level. The psychological skills training (PST) was focused on development of the capabilities that elite athletes use in everyday and sport life. PST using cognitive methods (mindfulness) aimed at developing athletic skills to enhance performance. It is based on the assumption that the mindfulness leads to changes in the ability to respond to stressful situations and and also to more effective mental functioning. The research was based on a qualitative "single-subject" design with multiple baseline measurements across the participants. Overtraining was assessed in several subjects, the top swimmers aged 17-18, who regularly participate at representative competitions and train five times a week, most often in a two-stage mode. The intervention started at different times in different individuals to make clear whether any change in behavior was the result of intervention itself or other intervening variables. Baseline consisted of six measurements over three weeks in the interval twice a week. The measurements of SWLS, POMS, PSQ and heart rate variability were used. The results of the participants were analyzed separately, the results of the four probands will be presented at the symposium. The prevalence of overtraining symptoms was mostly affected by the seasonal training phases. |
