Description | Low-carbohydrate high-fat diets become highly popular both among athletes and even non-athletic population. There are number of metabolic changes that may promote athlete’s performance in particular sporting situation. Moreover, recent studies have confirmed that the low-carbohydrate regime has a beneficial effect on a number of cardiovascular risk markers. Low-carbohydrate high-fat diets are not primarily energy-restrictive, but are principally based on manipulation with the carbohydrates to fat ratio in the daily diet. In general, this regime significantly changes the paradigm about the need of carbohydrates in human nutrition. However, clear definitions and conditions for the individual implementation of low-carbohydrate diet are lacking. The aim of the theoretical review is therefore to present an evidence based background of the forms of low-carbohydrate diets used by athletes and to point out some of the proposed potential health benefits. |
