Description | The paper sums up different attitudes towards verbal diminutives in Czech and German and tries to outline the core of this phenomenon from the morphological and semantic point of view. The contrastive and strictly corpus based analysis of the Czech and the German verbal diminutive forms reveals that only few suffixes can be used in an evaluative way (in terms of Bauer 1997) for forming real verbal diminutives. Further, most of the affixes considered being diminutive function as semantic markers differentiating the base verb from its morphological modification by aspect, phase or intensity. |
