Description | The locality Jihlava U mlékárny lies in the north-western part of the town of Jihlava. The studied slag samples originated in Medieval times and they were collected from two nearby sampling sites. Two different types of slags were distinguished on the basis of optical microscopy, microprobe microanalysis and bulk composition. Type A1 is represented by slags composed predominantly of olivine and glass. Bulk slags show high FeO contents (up to 40.62 wt. %) as well as low Pb contents (0.81–1.63 wt. % PbO). The second slag type (A2) is consists of barium-rich feldspar and Ba-rich glass (up to 37.52 wt. % BaO). Slags A2 differ from A1 by high BaO contents (up to 34.51 wt. %) and relatively elevated contents of CaO (5.56–6.51 wt. %). Low zinc contents (maximum 1.18 wt. % of ZnO) and the presence of metallic lead and sulphidic inclusions are common in both slag types. The slags also contain untransformed or unmelted relicts of quartz. We have also determined the melting temperature of the slags. The melting experiments were performed in a muffle furnace. Heating to the temperature of 1 000 °C resulted in the rounding of edges of the sample ML25 and A1 type slags. The temperature of 1 100 °C led to a complete melting of all samples. |
