Description | This paper addresses the phenomenon of code-switching in English as a foreign language (EFL) classes conducted at university level in Czechia. Theoretically and methodologically the analysis builds on Auer’s sequential approach to code-switching whereby the instances of code-switching are viewed as potential contextualization cues. The overall aim of the analysis, which builds on video-recordings of 11 EFL classes (987 mins), was to uncover how the participants used code-switching in teacher-student classroom interaction. This paper introduces the analysis and some of its preliminary outcomes. On selected data extracts it is shown how the teacher and the students used code-switching to deal with vocabulary items. |
