Description | Hymns are primarily associated with a serious and respectful approach to the gods in question. However, there are also some humorous moments to be found in some poems about the gods in the Greek literature of the archaic period (for example: Homer, VIII, 256ff. and some Homeric hymns). And apparently Callimachus, the leading poet of the Hellenistic period, did not avoid this approach either. He is known above all as the one who gave a trend in contemporary poetry, and an extraordinary scholar in many disciplines. His hymns, however, prove that he was also a man with a fine sense of humor, at least in terms of poetry. |
