| Description | In the 20th century, child and childhood specifics came to the focus of scientists, politicians and parents. Children are well cared for, nurtured and loved but at the same time become unwilling witnesses to their parents' fights and quarrels. The suffering, which this unintended cruelty brings, became the theme of the latest graphic novel by Slovak author and artist Branko Jelinek. Jelinek let this theme grow and mature over a long period of ten years before he presented a psychological portrait of the soul of Oskar Ed – a slightly unusual child, who escapes into his own fantasy world which mercilessly uncovers the frightening banalities of our everyday lives. In the context of the theme of malevolence and abuse, we try to analyze the book My Greatest Dream - an iconographic study of today's typical family. |
