| Description | The aim of this study is life of foreigners in Taiwan in the period from the end of Second Opium War until the island was ceded to Japan. (1860-1895) During this era many foreigners founds their way to Taiwan, the majority of them were British citizens, but later on also Americans (after the end of the U.S. Civil War). Most of them were merchants, missionaries or officials. What kind of information about Taiwan they had had before their departure? How did they cope with different cultural and environment? What kind of difficulties they had to face? Or on the other hand, what was a pleasant surprise for them? This study is based on a wide range of primary sources – official letters and reports, medical reports, missionary reports and private correspondence. It focuses on the foreigner’s expectations and perceptions in the 1860s and how their knowledge had changed in following three decades. |
