Description | The text deals with reflections on environmental issues in the work of Czech artists working in the Czech territory in the last decade of 20th century. Particular attention is paid to the four art projects, which share engagement, great ambitions and implementation complexity. Although none of them was fully completed, they represent the most significant manifestations of this kind of this period. The Helen Mayer’s and Newton Harrison’s project as well as the Thomas Büsch’s and Jaroslav Kabilka’s projects can be characterized as import, overlap of foreign artistic environmental oriented activism on the local scene. Works of Lukáš Gavlovský and Federico Díaz can be seen conversely as a green trend of gradually emerging engagement of local artists. The Gavlovský’s project is moving in the direction of a more practical activism. In the Díaz’s project, the author’s techno-optimism is unusually intertwined with holistic and spiritual visions. Altogether, these examples allow for creating a more compact image of green trends in the Czech art of the time. They indicate that the nature of these reflections of environmental issues reproduces some trends in Czech art, i.e. they show mistrust in engaged art, which has been disappearing slowly, or a certain romantic and transcendental elements. |
