Description | Musical activities in the town parish church of St. James in Brno in the 16th century were strongly influenced by the religious conditions prevailing in this royal city, in particular the activities of the Brno City Council, which was in charge of all the personnel agenda in this church under the patronage rights of 1532. The city council therefore paid all the church employees. The employees of St. James’s School, i.e. teachers, school masters, and their aides, as well as the organist and town bugler were the ones primarily connected with music activities in St. James’s church. Thanks to the consistent excerption of the sources stored in the Brno City Archive, i.e. council and beneficiary accounts, books of town correspondence and testament registers, a fairly colourful and differentiated structure of musicians connected with the temple of St. James was documented; this study aims to describe the structure of the musicians as well. |
