Description This paper deals with the terminology used for denomination of interests (in Latin usurae), which stems from Latin and reflects the later ban of imposing and collecting any interests. Thus, the language reflects the change of legal regulation and as soon as the interests are prohibited, the meaning of “usura” (interest) slowly changes into “usury”. There are also attempts to circumvent the prohibition of interests, the most effective way being via the damages (in Latin interesse, interest). This is reflected in many languages as well while the meaning of “interest” slowly gains its today’s meaning.
