Description | Cinematic Brno database was used as a source material for identification of film preferences of a nationally defined section of cinemagoers in Brno – i.e., of Germans. Programme structure, ownership, oral histories, contemporary reports, and long-time strategies helped to identify four cinemas which were „German“ and whose audiences can be understood as German cinemas. Those four cinemas successfully fostered their identity as venues for German movies (and German audiences). the German audiences shared with Czechs the enthusiasm for varieté kind of comedy as represented by Burian and Kohout (and Czechs were enthusiastic about Hans Moser). Although the audiences slightly preferred comedies which were closer to their “Heimat” and their language, they were able to laugh together at the histrionic performances of Burian and Moser who was, in an apt remark, described by a Czech narrator we interviewed, as „a German Vlasta Burian“. |
