Description | The aim of the paper is to analyze the shadow motif which is one of the permanent archetypal images in the fiction of Branquinho da Fonseca (1905-1974) and Tomaz de Figueiredo (1902-1970). In the short-stories of these writers, it is treated not only as a description device, suggesting a specific, mysterious atmosphere, but also as an uncanny motif of the double or haunting. Beside a contextual approach, this paper focuses on two homonymous short-stories “A Sombra” (“A shadow”, 1945) by Branquinho da Fonseca and “A Sombra” (“A shadow”, 1934) by Tomaz de Figueiredo. |
