Description | I focused on literary constitutions of national identity on the basis of problematic historical events in the dramatic work of Lukas Bärfuss and in works of selected German-speaking authors. Of particular interest is a comparison of historical reappraisals of the national past in the Swiss context as well as in the context of the German-speaking area. For example, Elfriede Jelinek practices harsh criticism of the “memory defect” of state and social structures. In addition to this author and Thomas Bernhard, Marlene Streeruwitz also represents this approach. In her poetics, a criticism of Austrian domestic issues regarding its Nazi past plays an important role. A similar statement, as in the essay “A warning call: Switzerland got mad” by Lukas Bärfuss, in which an inclination to right-wing ideas in Switzerland is critically examined, is also represented by Peter Turrini, another playwright who problematizes the lack of historical dispute and war debt repudiation in Austria. An extensive inclusion of literature by and about Streeruwitz and Turrini has been one of the concerns of the stay in Greifswald. A thorough search of primary and secondary literature about these authors could reveal a potential for my further research which now remains hidden. Above all, the attempts have been made to theoretically understand the condemnation of the inadequate coming to terms with the past and to establish postulates that would make it possible to distinguish between Swiss and German-speaking dramatic confrontation of it. |
