Description Extreme rituals involving painful body mutilation remain an evolutionary puzzle. How to explain the lack of obvious fitness benefits with such a high risk of injury, trauma or infection? One of the proposed hidden benefits could paradoxically be a positive long-term health impact. We report the results of a comparison of physiological measurements and subjective assessments of the quality of life before and after the Tamil Hindu ritual Kavadi between the participants and the control group.
