| Description | The aim of the chapter is to analyze the office of pontifex maximus and its relationships to the Roman literary tradition. It focuses on the opinion of Romans relating to the establishment of this office. The chapter analyzes the primary sources and tries to solve the disagreements between them, the etymology of the pontifex name, the oldest ritual (Argei) and festivals which were under the pontifex administration. |
