Description The provision of domestic security is a primary obligation of the state towards its citizens. A number of entities are involved in this task today: the police, intelligence services, customs and judicial institutions, and even private security companies. The activities of domestic security forces, implemented to protect citizens and to provide national security, significantly influence civic freedoms, human rights and the quality of liberal democracy overall. This book provides an overview of the evolution of security forces and intelligence services in Central Europe since 1989, focusing in particular on changes in the powers, priorities, functions and strategies adopted in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia during an era marked by the fight against terrorism and the refugee crisis.
