Description | The study approaches Hofman as a leading light of the so-called 'new wave', which was an anti-illusionary movement in Czech literature for children and youth. That movement depicted a childhood world stripped of sentiment and talks from the personal perspective of its heroes, who live in an outwardly safe family environment that is nevertheless devoid of feelings (examples are Flight and The Red Shed). Hofman's fictional world, peopled by both ordinary children and outsiders, is constructed in a cinematic way with attention to the details of characterisation and cross-fading scenes. |
