Description | Why did the art collections of interwar Czechoslovkia period physicians, bankers, lawyers, businessmen originated and what were their characteristics? Together, we look at the history of 20th century art collecting as an activity inherently linked to the lifestyle of a dynamically developing middle class. What were the fates of these collections as well as their owners after World War II? Where are they today? And what happened to the confiscated artistic possessions of the displaced Germans during this period? Did you know that one of the largest centers where confiscated assets were concentrated and then sold in bulk was in Brno? These and other questions on the issue of collecting and provenance research in Czech collections will be opened by this lecture.
