Description | The navicella fibulae represent one of the most characteristic part of the clothing in many European regions during the Early Iron Age. One of the most characteristic types is the type of Šmarjeta, typical with three longitudinal ribs, decorated by the transverse incisions. Considering its dense occurrence in the area of Dolenjska group in Slovenia, this type is regarded to be of a Southeast Alpine origin. The distinctive presence of this type in Central Europe is well documented during Ha C2-Ha D1 especially in the hillfort of Molpír in Southwestern Slovakia and in the necropolis of Hallstatt. The gradual increase of the fibulae finds of Šmarjeta type are recently registered due to finds made by the metal detector seekers also in other settlement sites in Moravia or Slovakia. Such increase thus stimulate a question, if their high density in certain parts of Central Europe may be caused by their hypothetical local production and distribution. In order to answer this question, the working team organized a small research project focused on determination of hypothetical provenance by the detection of the element composition of the bronze used for manufacture of individual fibulae. The project aims for selected fibulae from the Moravian and Slovakian sites and for their comparison with the fibulae from Slovenia and Austria. Taking into consideration that a huge discussion on the suitability of particular provenance methods is nowadays in progress, it is also neccessary to realize, that during the described project only the non-destructive methods are admissible. From this reason all objects are researched exclusively with the spectral analysis (XRF). |
