Description The study is dealing with a still little-explored topic of the care for orphans in Austria at the end of the 18th and in the 19th century. The most important question is the emergence of a state-guaranteed care for orphans as a part of the system of state care for people in need in the Habsburg Monarchy. Therefore, part of the study is a narrowly restricted analysis of legal measures in the period after the abolition of the patrimonial system (1848). The focal point of the insight into legislation around the mid-19th century, i.e. the period immediately preceding this study, is the domestic affiliation of orphans, which was a quite fundamental factor in determining their social welfare. Attention is also focused on the legal situation of foundlings whose status in society was normally determined by special laws. The study consists of three different, albeit mutually methodologically developed areas: the state of research in Czech and German speaking areas, an analysis of the laws pertaining to orphanage care, and relevant examinations of the archive material at the archiepiscopal orphanage in Nové Sady near Olomouc. The study reveals the previously unresearched and complex conditions in the financing of socially active organizations, as well as the interesting development of the attitude of the state towards those in social need.
