Description | The subject of the review is The true History by Jan Augusta and Jakub Bilek. The author depicts the period around the middle of the 16th century, when members of the Unity of Brethren – friends Jan Augusta and Jakub Bilek – were imprisoned and tortured for their faith. The text allows the reader to look into a complicated period of history from the immediate point of view of both protagonists who are trying to defend their religion and leave the Krivoklat’s prison. The Czech brothers must fight on three fronts: against representatives of the Catholic Church, Utraquists, but also against other members of the Unity of the Brethren. Bilek's passages are rather memoirs, but he also implies some fiction procedures into his work; the texts associated with Jan Augusta give us an insight into the elaborate rhetorical techniques that the Czech brothers used in their defense. |
