Description | Freedom of speech is one of the fundamental value pillars of the European civilization. Opinion diversification as well as plurality are important control tools of democracy and an interest in their preservation is obvious. However, with the rise of social networks and new alternative media, false descriptions of reality are being accepted and consumed by the public. These aim to manipulate and cause fear and hatred - disinformation and fake news undoubtedly influence society. European countries as well as the European Union have deployed diverse legal tools to fight against the spread of false information while trying to balance on the edge of freedom of speech. However, the solutions are often objects of public controversy. The aim of this paper is to bring an overview of the situation in Europe and to chart both legislative and executive attempts in the fight against the spread of disinformation on the Internet in the context of protection of the freedom of speech. |
