Description | This chapter focuses on the revision of the EU legal framework for the use of biofuels, in particular, negotiations regarding a new directive on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources which was adopted as Directive 2018/2001 (RED II). In RED II, the overall EU target for Renewable Energy Sources consumption by 2030 has been raised to 32 %. At the same time, the new framework includes sub-targets for the transport sector and the use of biofuels of the first generation in order to decrease demand for food and feed crops for biofuels production. It also provides greater flexibility to member states on implementation choices concerning the transport mandate and sustainability criteria which, however – as the author concludes – may undermine any ambition to achieve the common goals. |
