| Description | The study deals with the phenomenon of peasant seals from southern Moravia in the period from the Thirty Years War to the mid-19th century. This is a specific example of the representation of peasant strata, which in Central Europe is most often associated with the privileged free position of peasants. In the Moravian context, this practice is documented only in the wine-growing and German-speaking regions bordering the Lower Austrian Weinviertel area. In these regions the identity of the predominant language made it possible to take over forms of representation associated with the urban environment without any major obstacle. The iconographic repertoire was based on the winemakers’ and peasants’ working environment (winegrowers’ knives, grapes, ploughs) and Catholic religious beliefs (a heart with three flowers). This limited number of themes was rendered more individual by the initials of the seal holders. |
