Description | This ethnographic work deals with the semi-nomadic population of a Mongolian enclave, the Mongol Henan Autonomous County, within a Tibetan Autonomous Prefecuture in China´s province of Qinghai. This enclave is a complex ethnic environment with a population of about 39,000 people, of whom approximately 90 percent are classified as Mongols. These Mongols speak almost exclusively Tibetan. The Tibetan-Mongol identity - what is that supposed to be and how is it characterized? Using various theories about remembrance and memory, the question of the construction of their collective identity is answered in view of their positioning within the Chinese state, but above all within the Amdo Tibetan cultural area. This study makes a new contribution to understanding the heterogenity and complexity of the nationality question in China with a view to local interactions between different ethnic segments of the population that leads to ethnic mixing. |
