Description | The author reflects on the relationship of the Czech duke Vladislav II and his successors to the emperor Friedrich Barbarossa. Older literature generally considered the first tributary relationship of Bohemia to the Empire, which was to be transformed into a fiefs relationship since 1002. According to the author's findings, the Czech dukes of the Přemysl family recognized the sovereignty of the imperial rulers; when elected by the home assembly, she applied for confirmation of rank, which was done by passing a banner (vexillum) while taking the oath of fidelity (homagium). It is certainly not possible to perceive the Duchy of Bohemia, as did older German literature, as "Fahnlehen des deutschen Königs". Similarly unclear was the position of the Czechs during the Barbarossa period, which handed over the rule of the land through banners, but the Přemyslids passed them on. |
